Train to Compete, Perform to Excel

Performance crews are where passion meets commitment. It’s the pathway for dancers who want more than weekly classes, who crave the challenge of competition-level choreography, the camaraderie of a dedicated crew and the rush of performing under lights for judges and audiences.

At Dance Direction QLD, our performance crews compete at local competitions throughout the year across multiple genres including jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop and acrobatics. But it’s about far more than trophies. Dancers develop resilience, discipline and stage presence that regular classes alone can’t replicate. They learn to handle pressure, support teammates through nerves and deliver their best when it counts. We’re a family-run studio where competition enhances training rather than consuming it, our crews push hard, but the atmosphere stays supportive. Dancers celebrate each other’s wins, learn from every result and grow into performers who thrive under the spotlight.

What Performance Crews Have To Offer

Accelerated Growth

Competition preparation pushes dancers beyond their comfort zone. The intensity of rehearsals, the pressure of performance and the feedback from judges fast-tracks development in ways regular classes can’t match.

Real Performance Experience

Studio concerts happen once a year. Competition dancers perform multiple times throughout the season, building the stage confidence, adaptability and composure that only repetition provides.

Choreography Created for You

Performance crew routines are crafted specifically for each team, showcasing their collective strengths and challenging them to grow. It’s not recycled material, it’s choreography designed to help your dancer shine.

Teamwork and Belonging

There’s something special about training alongside dancers who share your commitment. Crews become tight-knit groups who motivate each other, celebrate together and form friendships that extend beyond the studio.

Performance Crew Dancing on Stage

What Performance Crew Dancers Develop

Training for competition builds specific skills that elevate dancers across all their training.

  • Performance Quality – The projection, energy and presence required to fill a stage and connect with audiences beyond the first row. Learning to dance for the back of the room.
  • Consistency Under Pressure – Delivering clean technique and full performance when nerves are high, lights are bright and judges are watching. The ability to execute when it matters.
  • Quick Choreographic Pickup – Competition dancers become adept at learning and retaining choreography efficiently, a skill that serves them in auditions, workshops and future dance opportunities.
  • Professional Standards – Understanding expectations around punctuality, preparation, presentation and conduct. The habits that separate serious dancers from casual participants.
Your most common questions answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child join a performance crew?

Performance crews are generally available from age five, though this varies by genre and team structure. Teachers can advise whether your dancer is ready based on their current training and maturity.

How much extra time commitment is involved?

Crews typically rehearse once per week in addition to regular classes, with additional rehearsals closer to competitions. Dancers should also be attending technique classes in their competition genres to maintain and build the skills required.

Does my child need to compete in multiple genres?

Yes. At Dance Direction QLD, dancers in our Performance Crew train and compete in multiple genres to support well-rounded development. This includes jazz, lyrical and contemporary, with acrobatics required for selected routines depending on the genre being competed. To compete in a genre, dancers must also be enrolled in the corresponding technique class (for example, Jazz Technique for jazz, and the relevant technique classes for lyrical and contemporary). This ensures dancers are trained safely, correctly and confidently, and supports strong performance outcomes on stage.

How do you balance competition with enjoyment?

We take competition seriously but keep perspective. Results matter less than effort, improvement and attitude. Our crews work hard and aim to perform their best, but the experience should be challenging and enjoyable, not stressful or negative.
