The Dance Style That Does It All

Jazz is where technique meets personality. It teaches dancers to move with precision and power while developing their own expressive style. At Dance Direction QLD, our jazz program builds coordination, musicality, strength and confidence, skills that transfer across every dance genre and extend well beyond the studio.

What truly sets jazz at DDQ apart is our environment. As a family-run studio, our teachers know every dancer by name and classes feel supportive rather than intimidating. Whether your child dreams of competition stages, formal qualifications, or simply wants a fun and active outlet each week, there is a jazz pathway here for them.

Jazz Dancing on Stage

What Your Jazz Dancer Will Learn

Jazz training at Dance Direction QLD focuses on building strong, confident performers through quality technique and age-appropriate, engaging training.

  • Technical Foundations – Dancers develop essential jazz technique including isolations, correct jazz hands and arm placement, triplets and chassés, progressive turning sequences, and leap technique such as grand jetés.
  • Musicality & Rhythm – Dancers learn to move with the music by understanding rhythm, hitting accents, working with syncopation, and interpreting a variety of musical styles.
  • Performance Quality – At DDQ, we emphasise confidence, expression and stage presence. Dancers are encouraged to perform with energy, dynamics and intention, learning how to project and connect with an audience.
  • Strength & Conditioning – Strength and control are built naturally into every class through centre work, across-the-floor progressions and targeted exercises designed to support safe technique and powerful movement.
Your most common questions answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start jazz?

Children as young as two can begin with our Ready Set Dance pre-school program. Structured jazz-only classes begin from age five in our DDQuties program.

Does my child need dance experience?

No prior experience is needed. Our classes are structured by age and ability level, so beginners learn alongside others at the same stage.

What’s the difference between open and exam classes?

Open classes focus on technique and choreography without formal assessment. Exam classes follow the APDA syllabus and prepare dancers for graded examinations.

How do I know if my child is ready for Performance Crew?

Performance Crew suits dancers who want competition experience and can commit to additional rehearsals. Our teachers can advise based on current training level.

Can my child do jazz alongside other dance styles?

Absolutely and we encourage it! Jazz combines well with almost every genre we offer.
