Take Your Training Off the Ground

Aerial silks is where dance meets flight. It’s the thrill of moving through the air, the satisfaction of mastering skills that look impossible, and the unique challenge of using your whole body in ways floor-based training never requires. For dancers looking to expand their abilities and try something genuinely different, aerials delivers.

At Dance Direction QLD, our aerial silks program is taught by Mr Shane in a safe, supportive environment where correct technique always comes first. Students learn proper climbing, wrapping and movement progressions while building the strength and body awareness that make advanced skills possible. We don’t rush, every dancer works at their own pace, celebrating small wins while building toward bigger goals. Aerial silks complements dance and acrobatics training beautifully, developing strength and control that transfer back to the studio floor. But beyond the physical benefits, there’s something special about conquering a skill that once seemed out of reach. That confidence stays with students long after they climb down.

What You’ll Learn in Aerial Silks

Climbing Technique

Safe, efficient methods for ascending the silks using proper body mechanics. Students build the foundational skills that make all other aerial work possible.

Wraps and Locks

Learning to secure the body in the fabric through various wraps, locks and holds. These techniques create the foundation for poses, transitions and dynamic movement.

Poses and Shapes

Creating beautiful positions in the air, from simple beginner shapes to more complex poses as strength and confidence develop. Each pose builds on previous skills in a logical progression.

Aerial Movement

Flowing between positions, transitioning through sequences and eventually combining skills into creative movement phrases. Where technique meets artistry.

A class like no other

Why Aerial Silks Transforms Dancers

Strength You Can’t Build Elsewhere

Aerial silks develops upper-body and core strength in ways that floor-based training simply cannot replicate. Students build functional strength through movement rather than repetitive exercises.

Full-Body Awareness

Knowing where your body is in three-dimensional space, controlling movement while suspended, understanding how to use the fabric as a partner, aerial training develops proprioception at an advanced level.

Resilience Through Challenge

Not every skill comes easily. Aerial students learn to work through frustration, break challenges into smaller steps and persist until breakthroughs happen. That resilience transfers to every area of life.

Confidence That Comes From Conquering Fear

There’s something powerful about doing something that once seemed impossible. Students who master aerial skills carry that confidence into their other training and beyond the studio.

Skills You’ll Develop with Aerial Silks

Aerial silks training builds physical and mental attributes that enhance all other dance and movement pursuits.

  • Upper-Body Strength – Climbing, holding and controlling the body in the air builds arm, shoulder and back strength that most dance genres don’t specifically target.
  • Core Stability – Every aerial skill requires core engagement. Students develop deep core strength and control that improves posture, technique and power across all their training.
  • Flexibility & Coordination – Aerial work challenges flexibility in dynamic, functional ways while developing the coordination to manage multiple body parts and fabric simultaneously.
  • Focus & Determination – Learning aerial skills requires concentration, patience and persistence. Students develop the mental discipline to work through challenges methodically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is aerial silks safe?

When taught correctly with proper progressions, yes. Mr Shane prioritises technique and safety above all else. Students learn correct methods from day one, and skills are only progressed when foundations are solid. Equipment is regularly inspected and maintained.

How strong does my child need to be to start?

Students don’t need to arrive strong, they build strength through the training itself. Beginners work on foundational skills that progressively develop the strength required for more advanced work.
