Street Style, Studio Standards

Hip hop is the genre kids ask for by name. It’s the movement they see in music videos, on social media and at live performances—and it’s the style that lets dancers express attitude, individuality and pure energy in ways other genres don’t.

At Dance Direction QLD, our hip hop program channels that excitement into proper technique. Dancers learn authentic foundations, grooves, isolations, hits and the rhythmic bounce that defines the style, not just copied choreography. And because we’re a family-run studio where teachers know every dancer personally, classes balance high energy with the encouragement and individual attention that help kids progress. Whether your child wants to freestyle with friends, master trending choreography or perform on competition stages, hip hop at DDQ gives them the skills and confidence to own it.

Style, Feel and Expression

What Makes Hip Hop Unique

It’s the Style Kids Connect With

Hip hop is the dance of popular culture. It’s what they see their favourite artists doing, what trends on their feeds, what makes them want to move. That built-in motivation keeps dancers engaged and excited to train.

It Builds Musicality Through Feel

Hip hop teaches dancers to listen differently, to find pockets in the music, ride the bass, hit accents and express rhythm through their whole body. That musical intuition transfers to every other genre.

It Encourages Individual Expression

While technique matters, hip hop celebrates personal style. Dancers learn the foundations, then make movements their own. It builds creative confidence and self-expression in ways structured genres don’t always allow.

It’s a Serious Workout

The explosive movements, sustained energy and full-body engagement make hip hop one of the most physically demanding genres. Dancers build cardio fitness, strength and stamina while having fun.

Hip Hop Dancing

What Your Hip Hop Dancer Will Learn

Hip hop training at DDQ covers the foundational and performance elements that define authentic street style.

  • Foundational Grooves – The rhythmic bounce and body movement that underpin all hip hop styles. Proper groove technique separates trained dancers from those just copying moves.
  • Isolations & Body Control – Head, chest, arm and hip isolations. The segmented body control that creates hits, waves and the sharp, controlled movements hip hop is known for.
  • Musicality & Timing – Finding the pocket, hitting accents, riding different layers of the music and understanding how to interpret tracks beyond just counting beats.
  • Performance & Attitude – Stage presence, facial expression, dynamics and the confident energy that makes hip hop compelling to watch. The swagger that comes from genuinely owning your movement.
Your most common questions answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start hip hop?

Children as young as two can begin with our Ready Set Dance pre-school program, which introduces hip hop alongside other movement foundations. Structured hip hop classes begin from age five in our DDQuties program.

Does my child need dance experience?

No prior experience is required. Our classes are grouped by age and ability, so beginners learn alongside others at the same stage with appropriate foundational training.

Is hip hop just copying music video choreography?

No. While we teach current, relevant choreography, our focus is on foundational technique, grooves, isolations, musicality, that allows dancers to execute any style of hip hop and eventually develop their own movement voice.

What should my child wear to hip hop class?

Dancers should wear their DDQ uniform, including a DDQ shirt and DDQ pants. Sneakers are required to allow safe movement, support and comfort during class. Hair should be tied back securely, and dancers should bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Is hip hop good for fitness?

Excellent. The high-energy, full-body nature of hip hop builds cardiovascular fitness, stamina, coordination and strength. It’s one of our most physically demanding genres.

Can my child do hip hop alongside other dance styles?

Absolutely. Hip hop complements other genres well—the musicality transfers to jazz, the body control supports contemporary, and the confidence carries into every performance.
